I’ve got issues. I’m far from perfect. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, either.
So, far be it from me to solve the problems of the world.
However, there are some remedies for today’s blights that are so obvious that even I can see them. For instance, Jesus is still the answer…. His Word still holds the keys…His Grace is still sufficient. I know these things to be true. I have lived/am living them and I’ve witnessed, first-hand, their power to transform….to make new…to give hope.
I’ve also grabbed hold of another Biblical solution to many of the woes of life that I want to talk a little about today. Whether we’re dealing with the problems of today or potential problems of tomorrow, whether it’s the disintegration of the family, immorality run rampant, apathy within the Body of Christ or even cowardice in Congress that may be troubling us, if we’d get this right…it’d be for the good of man and the glory of God.
“What is this solution?”, you may ask…. “What are we missing?
Men. Men of God. Men of God with strong backs, strong intellect, strong values and a strong faith in the One who empowers them.
Thats right. A ton of the clear and present dangers that we’re facing (particularly within the Church and as a nation) wouldn’t even be issues if Gospel men would have been, well…Gospel men. Many of the daunting walls we’re in the middle of scaling could be torn down if Gospel men would grab a sledgehammer and start swinging.
I’m utterly convinced that a resurgence of Gospel men would cause hell to tremble and straighten out the crooks of culture here. A re-emergence of men with conviction, with commitment, with Kingdom hearts…would change the world.
Admittedly, I’m a history nerd (AND Church History nerd), and being so, I’m well aware of the highlights, and lowlights of the story of mankind. Without boring you with detail, I’ve found that the presence of Gospel men directly correlates with the state of the world and the church. When Gospel men were present and accounted for, the Church was stout and therefore the values and strengths of nations were as well. When there has been an absence of Gospel men, the church was anemic, as was its influence upon culture and as a result…depravity ran wild.
I’ll let you make your own decision as to where we are right now….and why.
BUT…History, well you know, tends to repeat itself.
Personally, I am convinced that we’re in the shape we’re in today largely because of a glaring absence of Gospel men. Men like Luther, Wesley, Huus. Men that you’ll never know their names but will know their presence because of their deep, abiding love for Christ and faithfulness to Him, to their wives and children, to their Church. Men that loved God without reservation or shame.
That’s what we’re missing.
Sure, there are some but they are few and far between. The vast majority of men within our culture (and yes, within our churches) are weak, trite and spineless. The feminization of men movement has produced much fruit and we’re harvesting it right now. My goodness, I’ve had to be careful as to whether I’d address a person as “sir” or “ma’am” on more than one occasion. as many even dress, talk, act like women. We’ve decided that blurring the line of masculinity was somehow a good thing. We’ve gotten “in touch” with our feminine side but OUT OF TOUCH with the truth of Gods Word that calls us to strong, masculine leadership. We’ve become, in large part, Spiritual sissies. It’s sad state of affairs.
In light of all of this, you know what I’m praying for?
I’m praying for that resurgence of Gospel men. For men to be men (and not be embarrassed about it). For Men to rise up their homes again, understanding that it’s ON THEM to do so. For men to firmly grip the standards set forth by a Holy God and employ them within their homes, ridding their homes of smut and filling their homes with a passion for Christlikeness….for men to LEAD their families in holiness again, exclaiming with vigor “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord“. I’m praying for men to rise up within the Church. To take the lead, to weeping at the altar in prayer to bold proclamation of the Gospel as they go into the highways and hedges of this world. Men with such faith and confidence in God that they’d charge hell with a water pistol. Men with the heart to “serve tables” when called upon and the gumption to turn over tables when it needs to be done. I’m praying for men of God to stand and be counted for the sake of Christ. I’m praying for Gospel men who fear nothing but God.
I’m praying for Gospel men to “Rise Up”. Heaven knows we need them, to bad earth is clueless.
“Rise Up, O Men Of God!”
Rise up, O men of God!
Have done with lesser things,
give heart and soul
and mind and strength
to serve the King of kings.
Rise up, O men of
His kingdom tarries long:
bring in the day of brotherhood
the night of wrong.
Rise up, O men of God!
The Church for you doth
her strength unequal to her task;
rise up, and make her
Lift high the cross of Christ!
Tread where his feet have
as brothers of the Son of Man,
rise up, O men of God!
Soli Deo Gloria!
