We are a people of promise.

For me, and so many others, the Christmas season highlights that fact. Far above the glitz, the tinsel, the eggnog and even the nostalgia, my mind and heart is drawn to the centuries in which God was preparing people for the coming of his Son, our Savior, the Jesus.  Christmas is a season where we celebrate the fulfillment of the promises God made—that he would give a way to draw near to him….a means of salvation…a balm in Gilead….He promised that the Messiah would come. At Christmas we celebrate His coming.

We call this season ADVENT.

Advent is defined – “the arrival of a notable person, thing or event”

For the Christian, Advent simply (yet gloriously) speaks of the arrival of our Messiah. The fulfillment of Gods promise.

The Advent season last four weeks and for those four weeks, it’s as if we’re re-enacting and remembering the thousands of years God’s people were anticipating and longing for the coming of God’s salvation, for Jesus.

This Sunday at Double Springs we will begin our ADVENT Sermon Series and pray that you’ll join us.

By the way, with a culture gone berserk concerning Christmas, we’d all be wise to celebrate the advent season as a family to bring things into perspective, grow in grace and guard our hearts from the idolatrous, self-serving, materialistic thing Christmas can become. Below is a “Advent Family Devotion Plan” for you to employ this year. Read the passages below, maybe at dinner or during regular family devotion time and discuss them.

Possibly more than any other activity, Advent can restore Jesus to the center of the Christmas celebration (where He belongs). We at Double Springs pray that this is exactly what will take place in your home!

If we can be of any help to you in transforming your Christmas this year into a Jesus centered, Gospel proclaiming, life changing season…please feel free to ask.

Expectant and Hopeful,

Pastor Kyle
